What Is an Edition Print? What the Certificate and Serial Number Tell You

What "37/150" beneath a print means, what belongs on a certificate, and which questions to ask before you buy.

What Is an Edition Print? What the Certificate and Serial Number Tell You

You will see "37/150" written beneath a print. Those two numbers tell you on their own what you are holding: the work was printed in 150 copies, and yours is number 37. The whole logic of the limited edition sits in that small record.

What is an edition?

An edition is the reproduction of an image in a limited number declared in advance. When the run is complete the edition closes; the same work is not reprinted at the same size and in the same technique. That the number is both stated and closed is what separates an edition print from a poster that can be reproduced indefinitely.

Alongside the numbering you will sometimes see other marks. A.P. (artist's proof) indicates the small number of prints reserved for the artist and held outside the edition count. H.C. is used for copies withheld from sale.

What does a fine art print change?

A fine art or giclée print means pigment-based inks printed on acid-free, usually cotton-based paper. The difference from dye-based inks is longevity: pigment inks are markedly more resistant to light and humidity, and their colours shift far more slowly over the years.

Paper is half the work. Textured cotton papers give depth to watercolour and miniature reproductions, while smooth papers bring out detail in photographs. In a well-made edition, the brand and weight of the paper appear on the certificate.

What does the certificate document?

On a certificate of authenticity, expect to find:

  • The title of the work and its artist
  • The printing technique, the paper and the inks used
  • The print dimensions (of the sheet or the image, not the frame)
  • The total edition size and the number of this copy
  • The date of printing and the house that produced it
  • The signature of the artist or an authorised representative

The certificate also matters if you later pass the work on. Keep it with the print but never glued to its back.

Questions worth asking before you buy

How large is the edition? Has the same image been issued before at another size or in another technique? Are the paper and ink specified? If it has been framed, is the mount acid-free and the glazing UV-filtered? These questions put no pressure on a seller — a properly prepared edition already has the answers to hand.

A short note on framing

However durable the print itself, an acidic mount will leave yellowing along the edges of the paper within a few years. An acid-free mount, a gap that keeps the print from touching the glass, and UV-filtered glazing are the three details that decide how long an edition print lasts.
